Qualifications in Air Emissions Control

James E. Staudt, Ph.D., CFA

 Andover Technology Partners

Dr. Staudt is a nationally-recognized expert in emissions control from combustion sources, such as boilers, turbines, engines and process heaters.  Dr. Staudt’s expertise in emissions control spans the major pollutants from combustion sources: NOx, mercury, and multipollutant control methods (NOx, SO2, PM and mercury).  Dr. Staudt is especially well known for his contributions in the field of NOx control, but has been extremely involved in control of mercury in recent years.  He is one of the very few consultants in this field that has earned the respect of facility owners, technology suppliers, regulators and government agencies.  At previous employers he developed NOx reduction technologies, process design methods, and commercially sold and started up the technologies at utility boilers and industrial sites.  Since forming Andover Technology Partners, Dr. Staudt has advised power plant owners/operators, emission control technology suppliers, and government agencies on methods to comply with emissions regulations in a cost-effective manner.  Dr. Staudt has authored NOx, mercury and multipollutant control technology documents that are used by air pollution control professionals throughout the US and in other countries.  His SCR catalyst management software, CAT MANAGER™, and his technical report, “Selective Catalytic Reduction Technology - Operating Principles, Operating Guidelines, Troubleshooting Guide”, are licensed for use by owners of coal-fired utility boilers in the US and Europe.  Having a deep understanding of technology and extensive training in finance provides Dr. Staudt unique qualifications in advising clients on compliance strategies, especially those that involve integrating technology choices with allowance market transactions.  Dr. Staudt has developed powerful analytical tools for this purpose, and these may be used with his services.  Dr. Staudt has testified on his client’s behalf in litigations, spoken before Congressional staff, and has appeared on television speaking on behalf of his industry clients.

At prior employers Dr. Staudt played key roles in bringing new technology to owners of industrial energy systems.  He is responsible for starting two businesses for prior employers and played a key management role in the early stages of another.  Roles included business development and product management at suppliers of environmental control technology and process instrumentation to the energy industry. Prior experience at three of his previous employers highlighted below:

  • As Vice President for Business Development at Spectrum Diagnostix (SDX, a subsidiary of Physical Sciences, Inc., of Andover, MA) from 1995-1997.  Dr. Staudt led commercial deployment of this business that he previously conceived as an employee of PSI, which ultimately led to successful sale of SDX to BOVAR of Calgary.
  • As Product Director of NOx Control at Research-Cottrell (a major air pollution control equipment supplier) from 1992-1995, Dr. Staudt started a new product line for the company that posted several years of growth.
  • From 1990-1991 Dr. Staudt developed new businesses for Physical Sciences, Inc. (PSI) of Andover, MA (see SDX discussion above).
  • As Programs Manager at Fuel Tech, Inc. from 1988-1990, Dr. Staudt managed a chemical-process engineering group in the United States and managed company field operations in Germany and Japan. Fuel Tech supplies air pollution control technology to industry and is publicly listed on the NASDAQ Small Cap List (FTEK).
